Court freezes assets of major construction companies in a continued corruption case

Corruption crackdown continues as the number of suspects who are placed under custody reaches 55 as of yesterday. Moreover, an asset freeze order was issued against 210 individuals and 15 companies who are suspected of having dealings with the officials, individuals and brokers who are arrested for corruption charges.

The court has issued an asset freeze order on Gemeshu Beyene Construction Plc and Ellily Hotel, both owned by a notable businessman- Gemeshu Beyene.

Third Expressway to be constructed in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) is considering only Chinese companies for the construction of the nation’s third expressway, which will extend the Addis-Adama Expressway, with an estimated cost of 12 billion Br it secured from the EX-IM Bank of China.

For the project, the Authority re-announced a non-inclusive tender, only inviting Chinese construction firms. ERA announced the tender on June 1, 2017, in the daily state newspaper, The Ethiopian Herald.

Roads Authority Awards the Most Expensive Road Project

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) has signed an agreement with Rama Construction Plc for the construction of the so far most expensive road project at a cost of 69.2 million Br a kilometre.

The road, extending from Azezo-Gonder, covers 12.6 kilometres and will be constructed at a total cost of 871.6 million Br. The project takes the place of the Melka Jebdu – Dire Dawa road projects, which cost the Authority 63.5 million Br per kilometre. Various road projects awarded to local and international construction companies

Six new roads are in the works in the Southern Nation Nationalities & Peoples’ regional state, Somali regional state, Oromia regional state and Benishangul Gumuz regional state. The projects were awarded to three foreign contractors and three local private construction companies by the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA). All six projects are worth six billion Birr.

The Booming Road Construction Market in Ethiopia

The latest six-month report released by the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) revealed that it spent over nine billion Birr to construct roads in the past six months. This accounts for close to one-fifth of the budget allocated for the current fiscal year. There are 13 new projects that will be launched in 2017.

Araya Girmay Becomes the New Directory of Ethiopian Roads Authority

The Office of the Prime Minister has appointed Araya Girmay, former head of construction department at Sur Construction, to head the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA).

In a letter dated June 8, 2015, and signed by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Araya has been appointed to be the new director general of ERA.

Commenting on his appointment to The Reporter, Araya said that he will work to realize the goals set by the government with regards to the development of road construction.

Ethiopian Roads Authority Awards 4.8b Br Projects

Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) has awarded a 4.8 billion Br project to four companies, one local and three foreign, and subsequently signed a contract on March 21, 2015.

Two of them are in the Amhara regional state whereas the remaining two are in the Oromia and Southern regional states.
