Corruption crackdown continues as the number of suspects who are placed under custody reaches 55 as of yesterday. Moreover, an asset freeze order was issued against 210 individuals and 15 companies who are suspected of having dealings with the officials, individuals and brokers who are arrested for corruption charges.
The court has issued an asset freeze order on Gemeshu Beyene Construction Plc and Ellily Hotel, both owned by a notable businessman- Gemeshu Beyene.
Construction companies including, ASER Construction Plc., DMC Construction Plc., Tina Construction Plc., Yemane Girmay General Contractor, JJIEC International Engineering are among those which are on the asset freeze list.
In addition, a company called CAMANIC Trading Plc., a company majorly owned by Salem Kebede, one of the suspects in the corruption case, and Trans National Computer Technology, a local agent of Trans National Technology, a company that was involved in government financed Integrated Financial Management System, also saw their asset freeze at the end of week.
Representatives of Trans National and officials of Ministry of Finance and Economic Cooperation were arrested last week in connection to a corruption case which involved a multimillion birr procurement process to implement Integrated Financial Management System project.
Police has also detained Samson Wondimu, a long serving communication director of Ethiopia Roads Authority (ERA), this week. For the past couple of weeks Samson was said to be in the US, for family vacation. His arrest came just week after the detention of Zaid Woldegebriel, former Director General of the Authority.
Zaid was arrested in connection to 646 million birr damage to the public coffers while serving as a director up until 2014. He worked as a director for almost ten years.
So far, along with Zaid, 10 officials including deputy director generals are also arrested. From this, nine of them have appeared before court.
In addition, the second criminal bench of the federal high court has granted a two week extension period on the 45 suspects for the second time.
