The Office of the Prime Minister has appointed Araya Girmay, former head of construction department at Sur Construction, to head the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA).
In a letter dated June 8, 2015, and signed by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Araya has been appointed to be the new director general of ERA.
Commenting on his appointment to The Reporter, Araya said that he will work to realize the goals set by the government with regards to the development of road construction.
Araya graduated from Addis Ababa University in 1995 in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he worked as a project manager of the Gedo-Fincha road construction.
Starting from 2007, he worked at Sur Construction, one of the subsidiary companies of the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT).
Tadesse Yemane, general manager of Sur Construction, told The Reporter that after joining Sur, Araya was head of the Shawra-Gelego road construction project.
“It was an arduous project and I can say that Engineer Araya completed his task successfully,” Tadesse said. In addition to this, Araya was head of four major road construction projects which he successfully saw through, Tadesse added.
Prior to his latest appointment, Araya was head of the Zarima Dam project that was commissioned to Sur Construction by the Ethiopian Sugar Corporation.
It can be recalled that back in November 2014, Prime Minister Hailemariam relieved Zaid Woldegebriel – the long-serving director general of ERA – of his duties. A letter signed by the Prime Minister and dated November 30, 2014 stated that the dismissal was made upon a request by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) without disclosing the reasons. ERA is accountable to the MoT and minister Workineh Gebeyehu also serves as chairman of the board of directors of ERA.
